Smiles and tears
posted by robert - September 2nd, 2006 at 11:48 PM..no, no pictures this time. I have some on the camera but they haven’t made the migration to their gallery roost just yet. Patience, Daniel-san. I’m afraid that this is just a random post; it’s been a while since I had both the time and the inclination.
Audrey smiled her first real, actual, verifiable smile this week! Of course it happened while I wasn’t here (and not just at work: out-of-town at work), but my awesome Better Half got a picture of one of them. Since then she’s produced several more, and this morning was the first time I got to be the recipient of a few. Having your first child isn’t “a” bridge-crossing — it’s one bridge-crossing after another, as you realize over and over again that there seems to be no limit as to how in-love with this strange, cute little person you can be. On the other side of the coin, her right eye has been watery and teary — no really nasty discharge or anything (mmmm - who’s hungry!), just regular tears oozing out, as if she had been crying real good (tears-while-crying showed up sometime during week two, IIRC). Her eye did this all day today, and one of Audrey’s great-grandmother’s guessed that it was a clogged tear duct. After doing a bit of research on this uh-mazing series of tubes that we call the Intarwebs, I confirmed that diagnosis. Thankfully, initial treatment is easy: just gently massage the corner of her eye near her nose several times per day and keep things clean — pretty much what we would have done instinctively anyway. If it doesn’t clear up in a week or so, we’ll give ye old pediatrician a call.
Sleep remains elusive, but I’m continually amazed at how adaptable humans are. For several nights Audrometer was sleeping 5-6 hours at a stretch; sadly, that hasn’t happened for several nights now, but I have high hopes (as does Nichole). And speaking of Nichole: I’m trying to talk her into posting more (time permitting, of course), so pipe up and send her some shout-outs if you’d like to see more content from her ;)
