Consen-S.O.S.
posted by robert - July 27th, 2005 at 1:14 PMNext time your favorite MSM outlet starts to breathlessly report on “global warming”, listen for this catch word: consensus. Just about every story I’ve heard in a looooong time on global warming talks about how “it’s a consensus among scientists that [insert ominous global warming prediction here].”
Dictionary.com defines consensus as “an opinion or position reached by a group as a whole.” A “scientific consensus” occurs all the time as new theories are being developed or explored. My problem with the “consensus” on global warming is that not only is it built on tenuous information and computer models that incorporate a lot of “grey areas”, but it is being used as a tool to attempt to affect government policy. I’m with Mr. Crichton on this: let’s study the global warming theories closely, as there could be dire long-term issues at stake. Let’s work towards implementing some of the more level-headed, low-economic-impact suggestions of the enviro-nutball crowd (forget “Save the planet” - the planet will be just fine whether we’re here or not. Let’s “Save the humans”.). But let’s keep the discussions honest — while Islamic homicide bombers are salivating to kill us, while our Constitution is being rewritten by the Supreme Court, while our country’s culture is spiraling down the tubes — let’s not act like the “consensus” on global warming holds comparable importance.

Cool! I had no idea Crichton had such level headed political views. I’d have to jump in the same boat as you two on this one.
