Melissa’s Joke of the Day

Wednesday, July 27th, 2005

Via email, of course.

A Marine squad was marching north of Basra when they came upon an insurgent soldier badly injured and unconscious. Nearby, on the opposite side of the road, was an American Marine in a similar but less serious state. The Marine was conscious and alert. As first aid was given to both men, the Marine was asked what had happened.

The Marine reported, “I was heavily armed and moving north along the highway and coming south was a heavily armed insurgent. Seeing each other we both took cover. I yelled to him that Saddam Hussein was a miserable low-life scumbag, and he yelled back that Teddy Kennedy is a rich, good-for-nothing fat drunk.”

“We were standing there shaking hands when a truck hit us.”

Consen-S.O.S.

Wednesday, July 27th, 2005

Next time your favorite MSM outlet starts to breathlessly report on “global warming”, listen for this catch word: consensus. Just about every story I’ve heard in a looooong time on global warming talks about how “it’s a consensus among scientists that [insert ominous global warming prediction here].”

Dictionary.com defines consensus as “an opinion or position reached by a group as a whole.” A “scientific consensus” occurs all the time as new theories are being developed or explored. My problem with the “consensus” on global warming is that not only is it built on tenuous information and computer models that incorporate a lot of “grey areas”, but it is being used as a tool to attempt to affect government policy. I’m with Mr. Crichton on this: let’s study the global warming theories closely, as there could be dire long-term issues at stake. Let’s work towards implementing some of the more level-headed, low-economic-impact suggestions of the enviro-nutball crowd (forget “Save the planet” - the planet will be just fine whether we’re here or not. Let’s “Save the humans”.). But let’s keep the discussions honest — while Islamic homicide bombers are salivating to kill us, while our Constitution is being rewritten by the Supreme Court, while our country’s culture is spiraling down the tubes — let’s not act like the “consensus” on global warming holds comparable importance.

We’re back in town — but me and the new Mrs. Morris will be busy for the next few days unpacking, settling in, and writing a bajillion thank you notes, so don’t expect much in the way of blog offerings for a while ;) I’ll post once pictures are available, which should be in 5-10 days or so.

Preble and Jon each have entertaining writeups on their blogs which I’d encourage you to check out. And as promised, a link to the wedding website.

Thanks to all of you that went out of your way (in some cases waaaay out of your way) to be there with us on the 16th.

Oh yeah: honeymooning was conducted at the Ritz-Carlton St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands :)

Going to the chapel

Thursday, July 14th, 2005

It’s time. The big day has arrived. Well, not quite — but as it’s only 53 hours away, I’ll round up. It has occured to me that this is my last blog post as a single man. Cool :)

If you’re wondering where the honeymoon is going to be …too bad. Pictures will be readily available via both my regular photo gallery and our wedding website (I’ll post the wedding site link once we’re back).

To keep you busy in the meantime, re-read our engagement story. Or you can enjoy yet another joke, courtesy of my sister.
