You won’t hear this

Thursday, June 23rd, 2005

…on CNN. Or MSNBC. Or probably even that cornerstone of the Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy©, Fox News: The War is Over, and We Won. I want to hear these stories of our soldiers WTFPWNing terrorists in urban combat; I don’t doubt it, and now I want anecdotes, with guys-who-were-there commentary. I want to hear real, candid, man-on-the-street interviews with normal Iraqis about what they care about, what they think the next few years holds for them, what they really feel about the war.

Furthermore, I do want to hear about Iran’s latest sham elections. And about the continuing U.N. IAEA manipulation that Iran is getting away with in plain view of the world. I do want to hear about Supreme Court decisions wherein the entire concept of private property not being seizable at any time by government is seriously undermined.

I don’t want to hear Jennifer Wilbanks’ steaming shovelfuls about her “reasons” for bolting. I don’t want to hear about Oprah Winfrey pitching a hissy-fit in France because some boutique wouldn’t let her in 15 minutes after closing time. I don’t want to hear about the latest American Idol standings.

A “person” may have the capacity to be smart, but “people” are dumb, panicky, and easily distracted. The American “people” are frightening in what they hold important — and in what they don’t hold important — and those priorities, to some degree, are reflected in the offerings made to us on television.

/rant :) I guess I was overdue.

Where to begin?

After my old college roomie Jon moved to Florida, he began talking about how we needed to take a road trip somewhere. Vegas, New York, somewhere different, somewhere out of the ordinary, a trip that we’d remember for the rest of our lives. We talked about it off and on for several years.

And then, this March, I got engaged :)

I think my status change, looming in the not-too-distant future, prompted ol’ Jon to kick the tires on our nebulous road trip concept, and finally press me into committing to doing something. After some discussion, we settled on New York, New York. The Big Apple. The city so nice they named it twice. There were only a few reasons for our choice, but they were fairly compelling. His dad lived there, so room and board would be free. Jon has been to New York many times throughout his life, so he would be familiar with things. And, of course, I had never been. We finally settled on dates: we’d fly out the evening of May 26th, a Thursday, and return on Tuesday May 31st, the day after Memorial Day. Plane tickets were purchased and calendars were marked.
