On Europe…

Monday, February 28th, 2005

..two items:

  1. An article by Mark Steyn on that loud sucking sound you’ve been hearing, roughly from the east… he identifies it as the sound of the gigantic toilet that is Old Europe.
  2. Some nutso pictures of a lot of snow ruining someone’s day. (hat tip to Neal)

unf-unf-unf

Jon’s blog is alive — go check it out at http://unf.coldwire.org/ Be sure to ask him what exactly the name means. And make lots of goofy comments. And rag him about updating the “About…” section. And rag him about getting a gallery online. Gotta keep the whip to these analog EEs or they’ll start playing Diablo all night…

Aliens cause global warming

OK… looong recommended reading here, but it’s an excellent piece: a lecture (given over 2 years ago, in fact) by Michael Crichton on the increasingly-alarming tangling of science (and “science”) with policy. Highly, highly recommended, because it addresses the prominence in our culture of such hot-button topics as global warming, second-hand smoke, nuclear winter, SETI… An excellent read. Hattip to Mr. Boortz for this link.

…a sample (tasty) quote:

Nobody believes a weather prediction twelve hours ahead. Now we’re asked to believe a prediction that goes out 100 years into the future? And make financial investments based on that prediction? Has everybody lost their minds?

A new Wordpress..!

Wednesday, February 16th, 2005

Woot! For those less technical (read: nerdy) readers out there, Wordpress is the engine that makes ol’ argus tick — the blog software under the hood. It’s a phenomenal product, and a testimony to the power of the open source development model.

The version of Wordpress I’ve been using all this time is 1.2 — now I hear through the grapevine that 1.5 has been released. So there will be an upgrade coming soon …and, in classic nerd fashion, that upgrade will likely prompt at the very least some design tinkering ;)

Blogs vs. the Bigs

Friday, February 11th, 2005

Hugh Hewitt takes an interesting (and short) look at how internet blogs have been bringing the Eason Jordan (of CNN) flap to light. Worth glancing at, if for no other reason than to keep an eye on a growing trend: blogs trumping the big media not only at their own game, but at just about every game.
